Breakout Session A: Generating New Knowledge or Implementing Scientific Evidence - Comparing and Contrasting the PhD and DNP

Dr. Harmon completed her Graduate level education and post-master certificate in Nursing Education at Thomas Jefferson University School of Nursing, and her DNP at Widener University. Dr. Harmon has more than 40 years of nursing experience, with 35 years in the critical care setting. As a Coordinator of Patient Care Services at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and clinical faculty at Community College of Philadelphia, she blends her commitment to critical care nursing with her interest in education and evidence-based practice to promote positive patient outcomes. Dr. Harmon has supported interprofessional education as a facilitator with Jefferson’s Health Mentor Program for the past 10 years. Within the medical intensive care unit at Jefferson, she led the implementation of nurse-driven rounds with her interdisciplinary colleagues, and continues to incorporate aspects of ICU liberation into nursing practice.
Dr. Rux is the Associate Vice President of Nursing Education, Professional Development and Practice Innovation with Temple University Health System (TUHS). Dr.Rux is an award-winning nurse leader with greater than 28 years of diverse nursing experience. Her education consists of graduating from the Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing, a Bachelor’s degree from Penn State University, a Master’s degree in nursing as an Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist, a Post Master’s in Nursing Education, and a PhD in Nursing Science and Research from Widener University. She received a Post Master’s in Nursing Administration from Villanova University. Most recently, she finished the degree requirements for a second doctorate, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), from Walden University. Her intentional work and research on preventing incivility in the nursing workplace has brought international awareness to the divisive concerns of incivility in the nursing work environments, and she has advanced best practice strategies to create healthy workplaces. Dr.Rux served as a member of the task force for the American Nurses Association Professional Panel for Incivility, Bullying, and Workplace Violence. Additionally, she holds numerous professional memberships, certifications, and fellowships spanning the administrative, education, and practice domains.
Dr. Schroeder is a nurse scientist who studies how social determinants of health influence obesity risk. Her work takes a population health approach that leverages geographic information systems (GIS), spatial analytic approaches, and large datasets. Dr. Schroeder’s passion for improving well-being by addressing social determinants of health arises from her clinical practice as an intensive care unit nurse. Dr. Schroeder completed a BSN at Bloomsburg University, a PhD and NIH T32 pre-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University, and a NIH T32 postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Temple University College of Public Health.
